Project Highlight #5

Project Name: Gurley Oil Superfund
Location: Arkansas
Duration: 6 Months
Description: This project involved the remediation of four surface impoundments containing approximately 20,000 cubic yards of acidic sludge from processing lubricating oil. The contaminants were to be neutralized, transported, and placed into an on-site landfill. Treatment activities were structured around preventing hazards to residents in the surrounding residential area due to possible SO2 emissions. One property line was within 25 feet of an impoundment. A specially designed shearing hydro-injector was utilized to suppress SO2 emissions while injecting lime and cement into the underlying sludge. Immediately upon injecting the cement, we excavated the treated material and placed it into the on-site landfill.

Project Highlight #7

Client: Confidential
Location: Ohio
Duration: 12 months
Description: This year-long project had a contract value around $2 million dollars and necessitated multiple remediation technologies. Our in-situ treatment and clean-up objectives required U.S. Department of Energy evaluation, and involved the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in heavy clay soils by vapor-stripping (ambient air and hot-air injection), peroxidation, and grout injection. We used a track-mounted crane with a hollow-stemmed Kelly bar fixed to a proprietary auger to install overlapping soil-treatment columns. This yielded an effective mixing diameter of 3-14 ft., with treatment to depths exceeding 100 ft. The D.O.E. concluded our successful treatment was cost-effective and provided a reduction of 85 percent of VOCs.
