Project Highlight #9

Client: Confidential (Railroad)
Location: Upper Midwest
Duration: 4 months
Description: A railcar washout facility pond located in a large rail yard contained approximately 15,000 cubic yards of vinyl chloride impacted sludges and soils. Due to the elevated vinyl chloride concentrations, even excavating the impacted media in an operating rail yard would have caused air concentrations to exceed acceptable levels for the surrounding rail yard workers. To overcome air emission issues, a large rotary mixing system with a vapor capturing shroud and vapor treatment system was employed. Treatment operations involved placing supersacks of Lime on the surface of the contaminated media, and then lowering the mixing auger and containment shroud onto the supersack. As mixing commenced, heat was generated, causing the volatilization of the vinyl chloride. The vapors were captured and treated. After treatment, the waste was loaded into trucks and sent away for disposal.
