What processes do we use for environmental remediation?
Injector: Rice Environmental utilizes a combination of chemistry, proprietary equipment and manpower to meet project objectives. Upon completing site-specific design and fabrication, Rice can provide optimal mixing and stabilization performance. For in-situ applications, we employ two injector systems and one rotary system for shallower mixing. (A separate rotary system for deep soil mixing is described below.) Our proprietary excavator-mounted injector system pneumatically conveys reagents through raking tubes and mixes the reagents with the sludge. An adaptation of this device, the Hydro Injector, is used to inject liquified reagents. Successive layers can be stabilized for deeper contamination.
Rotary & Deep Soil Mixing: This is accomplished through an advanced reagent delivery system and soil mixing to provide superior application and blending of most forms of insitu treatment. The deep soil mixing is accomplished with the robust rotary mixing process. The rotary system delivers impressive 500,000 ft. pounds of torque and can treat contaminated materials up to 150 feet or more with diameters up to 14 feet. This equipment has been engineered to provide unprecedented effectiveness in the application of many treatment methods including Dynamic Air-Sparging (injection/vacuum extraction), Bio-remediation (bio-mass/nutrient injection and mixing) and Stabilization/Solidification (grouts and slurries).
Reclamation: Past and current road work projects include new rightofway construction and existing road rehabilitation work. Clients for these types of projects have included Phillips Petroleum Company, Ultramar, Diamond Shamrock, British Petroleum/Amoco, and the Texas Dept. of Transportation, as well as numerous municipalities. All of these examples involved project dollar values in the millions.
Landfills: These construction projects included final closures by placing berms of waste material from around the top and inside perimeter of the cells into existing ditches, including clay caps, soil protective covers, and HDPE Liners, along with rock and drain piping and associated drainage structures.
Containment Dikes: Rice has experience constructing complex bentonite and HDPE-lined liquid hazardous waste impoundments. A recent six-month, $4.5 million project required removing overburden and an existing layer of rock; constructing containment berms; placing a 3-ft., bentonite-enhanced clay liner, a leak detection system and a 60-mil HDPE cover liner. A total of 217,000 cubic yards was cut from construction and borrow areas and 90,000 cubic yards of soil was used as fill.
